This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My goal is to provide a learning environment where language is not a barrier. Feeling good about oneself is extremely daunting when no one speaks your language. I've done well learning Spanish, but the world of languages is expanding so rapidly in our school, we must find a way to open the possibility of a learning environment that is free of a language barrier for our students.

My students are 91% Economically Disadvantaged with 54% learning English as a 2nd language.

Having the ability for students to listen in their native language breaks the language barrier immediately.

Our languages were Russian, Pastu, Swahili, and Spanish at the end of last year. Translating everything we say just isn't a reality. We can translate papers but actually talking to each other raises the students learning to the next level. Thirty years of teaching and I am excited with the possibilities this provides.

Being able to provide a 2nd comparative screen for a student while looking at specific assignments is invaluable. There are no extra computers on our campus and providing a translator device and Fire-Max tablet for online assistance in addition to the translation ability provides a 2nd level of support.

Breaking the Language Barrier with additional support allows my ESL students who have no peers to speak with a learning opportunity.

My ESL students want to learn and become disenfranchised when the lesson is their only one-way street of listening and doing.
