My Students
The first American woman in space, Sally Ride, once said that for a long time, society put obstacles in the way of women who wanted to enter the sciences. My female students still face many of those obstacles but that can and should change!
I work with a wonderful group of students but they suffer from a lack of self esteem and defeatism.
They are often bullied because they do not have the financial support that other students have. Many are first generation Americans and English is not their first language.
Our school is old and we do not qualify for Title 1 but out of 26 students in my class 3/4 are on Free and Reduced lunch. Most of my students have do not have funds for frills like clothing or recreational activities. They certainly do not have access to computers or fancy things like tablets. As a result, they do not use their time wisely. This is changing. Now, they have the opportunity to participate in a district wide robotics competition. Working together would help to reduce bullying, stress and improve self esteem while building a knowledge base of future skills.
My Project
My female students want to learn more about math and science and I want to help them acquire the skills to be successful in life. We have started working with local high school students to learn about robotics. Now, we have the opportunity to participate in a robotics competition program. We have scrounged some Legos materials but we need an inexpensive tablet so we can program our robot.
My wonderful class of multicultural and multiethnic students are often bullied because they are military brats and some strike out against other students because they feel different and don't fit in. They all deserve support. I plan use lessons from Bullying in the Schools with the members of my newly formed robotics club.
I desperately need an inexpensive tablet to help my students. The support of donors would have an immediate positive impact on the lives of these terrific kids.
Our school lacks many resources.
We lack adequate access to 21st century technology. This severely handicaps my students. I want to form a robotics club so all students can learn about math and science while learning how to get along. We need an inexpensive tablet so that we can program our robot and be competitive.
We need help before these students get to middle school and drop out. Help me to help them.
