My Students

My students are mostly intermediate English language learners who are learning both the English language and the Common Core Standards for fifth grade. These students live in poverty and deserve every opportunity we can give them in a society that stacks the odds against them. Most of my students are below level in reading and writing, which can really become a struggle by fifth grade.

My students are hard working, determined fifth graders who make me smile everyday!

They are very caring and appreciate the things we have to use in our classroom. At school, my students can submerge themselves in learning in a variety of ways where they feel comfortable and supported in the classroom. Many of them face stressful situations as part of daily life, so I feel it is important for them to feel safe and have voice and choice in their learning to make it more meaningful.

Creating a positive and accepting atmosphere in our classroom has improved students ability to learn, grow, and explore. We continue to find new ways to show kindness and support and have learned a lot about thanking people for their support!

My Project

My Blended learning mentor let our class borrow her Breakout Box which was my first experience but my student were so engaged and focused they didn't want it to end at the lunch bell! I knew we needed them for our classroom.

Breakout Boxes have several sets of locks securing the contents of the metal box and begins with an interesting scenario, followed by one activity to unlock each of the locks, and a TIMER is set so it's a team race to "BREAKOUT!" The activities provided in the online resources will provide the class many opportunities to use this Breakout Boxes across the curriculum for math and science to review concepts and allow the students to explore, discover, and work together to solve problems.

Students develop a sense of pride and accomplishment and it shows in the smiles in the photos taken with the "We Broke Out!" sign. It's a new, innovative way to get kids motivated to learn and I have seen it work. I enjoy watching the kids work through some difficulty to be successful and love the cheers of excitement when they get a lock open!

The kit includes access to many different concepts and topics that are part of the fifth grade curriculum. Students will look forward to these experiences as a way to work with their peers to show what they know. Many of the students need the practice of listening and also lack some reasoning skills so the students are forced to work together to reason things out, yet the students also have 3 hint cards they can use as a team to get help from the teacher. Again, this makes the group to decision make when to get support which is another skill they are developing.
