My students need a chance to use their problem-solving skills in a highly engaging way using a Breakout EDU kit. This kit replicates the currently popular escape rooms and brings it to the classroom!
The students in my classroom have a variety of backgrounds, skills and dreams. Some students are first generation English speakers. Some students live in small apartments with multiple family members sharing a bedroom. Others have parents who both work diligently to provide for the needs of their children. The diversity of students who come to my classroom have abilities that range from 1st grade math skills to high school reading levels. Despite these vast differences between them all, they come to school eager to learn and grow.
Our school is 1 of 3 elementary schools in our town and has a reputation for being the place where families want to send their kids.
Because of the overall socioeconomic status of our community, we provide both breakfast and lunch to all students and we operate as a Title I school with over 510 students in all.
When looking at my students, I hope to enable them to think creatively, deeply and thoroughly about their studies. I hope they realize that even though they are very different people, they are also similar because of their experiences in my class.
My Project
With the generous donations from donors, I will begin to turn my classroom into an academic escape room! Students will have to work together, solve puzzles, and think critically in order to "escape". When I receive these kits, I can use them across all types of curriculum and can use them with small groups or the entire class at the same time.
This summer I attended a conference where I got to try a breakout lesson and it was so much fun!
I am convinced that this is a tried and true way to engage kids today and a way to enforce those essential skills that many students lack today, such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving. Please help us escape the mundane!
