This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..."
Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my 32 students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. There are no shortcuts. To make the most of their future, they work hard today.
Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my 5th graders aspire to go beyond the stereotypes and be the first college graduates in their family.
Ours is a Title I school serving a largely immigrant, Latino population in a densely-populated urban city. 92% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room. We are all learners and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes because we know that that is where the real learning happens.
Have you ever seen something that completely changed your way of thinking? That's the feeling I got when I first saw the Sphero programmable robot. I know that technology is everywhere now. And my students have access to lots of personal devices now; it's not uncommon for someone in their family to have a smartphone or tablet for them to work and play on. But, they are just consumers, not yet producers and programmers. That's the next level!
My Project
When I saw what this robot could do, I knew I had discovered something amazing for my students. The undeniable truth is that my students will face a workplace that is deeply immersed in science, math, and technology. I want them to have those much-needed skill sets. My students work with the Hour of Code program to introduce themselves to basic computer programming and the Sphero continues that. It gives them the chance to learn coding and how each change determines how an app will respond. That direct cause and effect relationship will fascinate and inspire my students to learn and do more.
An interactive whiteboard system usually costs thousands of dollars, but this system will allow my students to present, show work, and manipulate programs right on our class whiteboard for the first time. This opens up all kinds of possibilities for how we work whole group. We will be able to label science diagrams, historical artifacts, and work on math and vocabulary review challenges.
No device will make my students learn; but, something unique can inspire them to want to learn and do more.
That spark of inspiration and motivation can't be ignored. There is no greater joy for a teacher than to see a student who challenges themselves to learn something new, not for a test or for the teacher or parent, but because they simply have that unquenchable thirst for knowledge. New technology in the classroom will be a great spark. Who knows where it will lead them in the future?
