My Students

When I tell people I teach 6th-grade math they usually respond by asking, "Is it by choice?" or "Isn't it hard to teach kids at that age?" Middle-school has this image of being an undesirable age range to teach due to the changes in rigor and maturity of these students. However, I love hearing this question, because I get to respond happily by saying, "Yes I chose it! I love my subject and the personalities of my students! I truly cannot picture teaching anything else."

I am happiest when I am teaching my students.

The students in the 6th-grade have a lot on their plate. It is their first introduction to a lot of new math standards, the rigor in ELA increases, they are going through the first stages of puberty, classes are switched differently than elementary school, they are now responsible for remembering homework by writing in agendas, they have to learn how to work locker combinations, and so much more! Yet they are still some of the most caring, kind, funny, inquisitive, competitive, and endearing students I have had the pleasure to work with so far.

My Project

If my project is funded, I will be able to bridge the language gap for my ELL students. As soon as I know it is funded, I will immediately work with my administration to place ELL students in my classroom. Then, I will wear the Microsoft Surface Earbuds daily as I teach the lessons. Every day, ELL students will have the Lenovo IdeaPad set up where they sit. These earbuds will be paired to the IdeaPad which will have one of the Microsoft 365 programs up. As I speak, the earbuds will transcribe my words in real-time into the program and translate it into one of 60 different languages.

So as I teach the lesson in English, my ELL students can read it in their primary language.

Allowing these learners to be surrounded in an English-speaking environment, while still understanding the lesson material. Aside from setting up the device and pairing the headphones daily, there are no extra steps or preparation that I will have to do. This is important because if the data verifies the success of implementing these headphones, I will want to share the initiative with educators around the country! That way even more ELL students can have the same chance for success as their peers. And "no prep work" is a big selling point for these educators.
