My students need American Historical fiction and non-fictional books such as a class set of 30 copies of Patty Reed's doll, Coolies, & other various series titles.
Can you image trying to understand an article in a doctoral magazine or an instructional manual for a car air conditioning system? Challenging right? (Well to me anyways haha!) The majority of my students are reading below grade level making their understanding of our material very difficult.
My students are not very interested in the history of our country.
The majority of them are on free or reduced lunches and have a little more to worry about than just their school work. Most are reading below grade level and need a lot of assistance to digest and comprehend what they are reading. Breaking down the material with fiction and picture books will help my students tremendously.
My Project
Bringing fiction into the classroom will break down the material and make it more interesting to the students. I will use the book "Patty Reed's Doll" to incorporate common core state standards while exploring the hardships of moving west. We will use the "Flip Histories" series to explore different perspectives of key events in history. We will use the "if you lived..." series of books to gain perspective of historical events from the people who lived through them. Picture books like George Washington's socks and Coolies will help my students that read below grade level grasp concepts and stories of people from our past.
All it takes is one book to open the world up to children.... Will any of these be the one?
Will you be the person that made it possible for my students to succeed? These stories will not only help my students understand the content that needs to be taught but I will use it to help teach essential research skills that will help them beyond the classroom in the years to come.
