My Students
After 13 years of successful teaching, I know students need to get out from behind their desks. They all need love and encouragement to be successful in school. This is particularly important for my 5th grade intervention students in my Title I school. Some are so discouraged after years of failure that they feel they cannot succeed. I never accept “I can’t.” Instead, I always tell them, “You can…you just haven’t learned it yet.”
We cluster on a carpet where there are no barriers between teacher and students.
We talk together, laugh together and learn together. This warm, loving, and nurturing environment is critical to removing the physical and emotional barriers so all students can thrive.
My Project
As a 5th grade Math Intervention teacher, it is my goal that all students are engaged. To accomplish the goal, it is imperative to break normal routine of students sitting behind their desks using those desks as a wall between student and teacher.
A comfortable carpet is an essential component in creating a barrier-free environment.
Whether it's morning meeting, mini-lessons, or sharing what we have learned, gathering together on the carpet creates the space to accomplish the goals. I am requesting a colorful Dot Spots Seating Rug.
Being on the carpet also creates a sense of community where students support each other, share their fears and dreams, and celebrate what they are learning.
