Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special educator in a socioeconomically disadvantaged, urban community in Southern California. All of my students are Latinx, and over half of them are English language learners. Most of the students I work with have a specific learning disability or another health impairment that impacts their ability to access the general education curriculum.
My students embody the core values that we prioritize at my school site: they show lion PRIDE.
Pride, respect, integrity, determination, and empathy. Even when there is a hard day, even when there is a hard week or a hard month, my students never cease to amaze me with their commitment to their academic success. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to support them in meeting their unique academic needs.
Students with disabilities have been particularly impacted by the transition to distance learning caused by Covid-19 and often in overlooked or unnoticed ways. Technical challenges, navigating new and unfamiliar platforms, interacting meaningfully through Zoom, all present unprecedented and often intimidating challenges for our students. Through my DonorsChoose I hope to lessen some of these barriers to access.
My Project
Students with disabilities have faced many new challenges as a result of distance learning. One of the greatest challenges my students have is efficiently navigating their computers from home. In order to lessen this barrier, I am asking for 10 computer mouses so that students have an easier time using their devices.
I am also requesting 10 draw pads for use in their math class.
The reason for this is that it is extremely difficult to see student work over zoom, and my students have great difficulty navigating online math platforms. This tool would allow students to write their work directly onto their computer screen using a stylus. This will improve my ability to progress monitor and ensure that students are following along with instruction.
Beyond distance learning, these tools will still be of use as we return to campus, as my school heavily uses computers in our classroom instruction.
