Breaking Down Barriers, Language Barriers That Is

Help me give my students access to books and materials that they can understand and enjoy. Help them to bridge the language barriers they encounter at school, at home, and in the community.

My Students

Many of these wonderful students come from lower income families. Many struggle to have their basic needs met. However, they show up ready and eager to learn. Many of the students come from non English speaking households. While attending an English speaking school their first language is either Spanish or Vietnamese. I also have a Deaf student who is trying to navigate in a hearing world.

The students and parents are working hard to ensure that they can be successful at school, home, and in the community.

My Project

The books and materials I have selected will be used to help the students in my school who have difficulty with speech, reading, and comprehension. They will also help families come together as students will be able to borrow books that they can read to and with their families. Growing the collection will also encourage reluctant readers to pick up a book.

It is important that we meet students where they are.

Many of these students have extreme language barriers they have to face on a daily basis. Providing students with authors, characters, and languages that reflect them, their families, and their cultures is crucial.
