My Students
Who wants to sit and listen to a teacher talk at you all day? In my classroom we play learning games and work in small groups. Most of my students come into 2nd grade far below the targeted reading level. Because of this, each student has work tailored to their own reading level.
I have the world's best students.
Most of them live in extreme poverty and need extra support in the classroom. But they thrive when given the support they need.
We are a urban, Title I school, as well as a STEAM magnet school. We challenge students to achieve at high levels and support them as they undertake new learning activities. Our curriculum focus is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), and our students use iPads daily to master the NC Common Core curriculum through discovery-based learning.
We believe in developing the whole child. We celebrate the natural curiosity of children, and we design instruction to engage each student in academic achievement, personal growth, and social development.
My Project
I am requesting 20 sound phones, fluency cards, two reading comprehension centers, a set of reading games, and paired and reproducible passages to read. The materials I am requesting will be used in my small-group reading instruction and in my reading centers.
My students will use the whisper phones along with fluency cards to build reading fluency. In a reading center students will read the fluency cards into their whisper phone. These phones are magic because they allow the students to hear themselves reading.
Many of my students struggle with reading comprehension. I am asking for small-group reading comprehension kits, one for 2nd grade as well as one for 1st grade. This will allow me to sit and work with my students in small groups based on their reading level and work on comprehension. I am also asking for reading skills games. These will be reading centers for the students to work on while I work with a group of students. Close reading passages and nonfiction and fiction paired passages will serve as another way for me to work with small groups to build comprehension.
My students' reading skills will improve by having updated, fun, interactive reading materials that are on their level.
They will enjoy being able to work with groups to build reading skills.
