Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students that are involved in this program are very much in tune with the veterans in our city. Due to their previous community efforts, our students have been invited to participate in the Breakfast with a Veteran event. This local event to thank all who have served and listen to their story..
The students are very curious about the role that our local community members have played in wars and conflicts of the past 80 years. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with several groups and to give our time when it is needed. The students very much wanted to make a personal connection to the Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts by listening to the story of someone who was there. It is through personal contact and faces of the past that students will hopefully try to understand the present and plan for the future. The students are very engaged in their community and would like the opportunity to make an even larger impact. Lastly, the students would like a chance to thank those who have sacrificed for our freedom.
The students will develop skills of empathy to be able to listen and assist their veteran in telling the story of their service. They will research the war or conflict prior, so they can ask informed questions and understand what they are being told. The students will have an appreciation for the sacrifices of our armed forces and also what it is like to be called upon to serve.
In Their Own Words
Our class has been involved with other veteran events and we are very interested in helping those who have served our country. We have been invited to share breakfast with a veteran and give the only thing we have to give...our time. We would really like to hear the stories that our veterans are willing to share and to show them that we care in the simplest of ways.
I would really like to take charge in this event because I think I am ready for the challenge of organizing my peers. This is a large event of over 100 students and veterans and I think that it would be really great community project for us to be involved in. I am passionate about veterans issues because I come from a family of veterans and I hope they will also participate in this event with me. I would really like to hear first hand stories of what has happened in the past and help someone.
This project is important to our school and community because we have a strong history of military involvement that reaches back to the world wars. This is a great opportunity to thank someone for the freedom that we enjoy today and the sacrifices of the past. For some veterans it is also a chance to show that we care today as they are ending their deployments and making the adjustments back to everyday life. We are committed to being a positive change in our community and this is a start.
