This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My Middle School offers American Sign Language. I am constantly finding new ways to make my class interactive. I incorporate all academics, Science, Reading, Language Arts, History and Math as well as other electives.

Students love to EAT!

I will introduce cooking activities they are familiar with and usually comfortable making/sharing and taking this simple activity to the next level by using American Sign Language. The students will measure recipes using measuring cups, measuring spoons (dry and wet ingredients). Using a griddle and waffle maker, they will describe temperature and how long to cook on each side and/or all together using Sign Language as a vessel to communicate. This integrates key vocabulary words and tactile skills. The majority of our students have deficits in vocabulary, this project will increase their knowledge base. The students will bring in their favorite topping for pancakes/waffles to share and introduce new signing vocabulary. I will also teach the correct way to set a table.

My goal for this project is to introduce new vocabulary (cooking), extend communication skills in sign language, and allow the students time for an activity where they are sharing similar interests.
