My Project
Since forming my ESL Breakfast Club at the beginning of this year, it has grown in numbers every week. Our ESL students have found the joy in coming together before school and learning english in an informal setting with their native English speaking peers Native English speakers interact with our new ESL students to make crafts such as jewelry and keychains. Students work through the craft instructions and are learning English through play. While enjoying forming friendships with other students they are learning new vocabulary in a natural language acquisition environment. Although our club started with only a few members, it is growing weekly with teachers coming in early to visit as news of the club is spreading throughout the building. As the time is passing my ESL students are building their self-esteem, practice English on their own, getting comfortable speaking the language with the other classmates and teachers. Every time I see this, I am motivated to continue this work. In order to continue this, having some of my resources replenished will allow the students to continue to be creative in their play. They will give the students a focus and an outlet to create things for one another and experience a sense of accomplishment. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but throughout the school community, building an environment of equity and belonging.
