My students come from an grossly deprived inner-city area. They are middle schoolers and therefore experiencing huge changes in their life, and huge pressures. Despite their poverty and social struggles they attend school regularly and find it to be a safe haven for them. At our school, they are provided free breakfast and lunch and a loving community of teachers and staff. The majority of these kids understand that their situation is dire and that education is their only path to a better life. As the students do not have any access to technology at home, this makes it difficult for them to do research and complete their projects. As a result our teachers volunteer their lunches and time before and after school to ensure that students have ample time and resources to complete tests, classwork and projects. As a teaching and learning community, we are committed to providing our children the skills they need to be successful, skilled leaders in their society.
