My Students

My students are excited and enthusiastic musicians, eager to learn, engage, and perform with the arts. As the designated arts school in Brooklyn, they all needed to audition to be here. In my classroom, the goal is to not only engage them as musicians, but as positive, encouraging citizens, ready to face each new day and challenge with a self-confident attitude, mindfulness, kindness first, and sometimes even jazz hands.

My Project

One of my favorite things about NYC schools is that open enrollment for high schools means that students can attend any high school, even if it is not located in the same neighborhood as where they live. An unfortunate consequence of this, however, is that oftentimes students find themselves rushing in the morning, or they miss that prime subway train or are halfway to the station before they realized they didn't have breakfast, and now they need to choose between being late or going hungry. For some of our students who can't afford extra snacks from the corner store on the way in, and have now missed their free breakfast, this can feel even more daunting.

These breakfast snacks, which feature whole grain and protein options, will be a great grab-and-go moment for our students who are arriving late to school and missed the school breakfast window.

No student should have to learn on an empty stomach, and your donation can provide a safe place where students can grab something to help them get through the first half of the day without judgment, regardless of their travel time, home life, or socio-economic status. For that moment, they are just a student grabbing breakfast in a place where they feel loved and cared for.
