After being a teacher for 6 years and teaching upper Elementary in fourth and fifth grade, an opportunity came to teach second grade. I jumped on it and will never go back to upper grades again! Second Grade is where my heart is at and it has to do with the students that I am lucky enough to teach! I have a class of 25 students there are 15 boys and 10 girls. I teach in a school district of nine elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. What makes my teaching job even more special is that I am teaching in the district that I attended growing up. Coming to work everyday is such an honor with this class of students. At my school we follow " PAW POWER" where we Practice safety, Own responsibility, Work together, Empathize, and Respect! And in my classroom all 25 of my students show these key characteristics each day.
Second grade is such an important year developmentally in all subject areas!
I love the fire that my students have when they come to school each day. They are the most thoughtful, willing, and driven group of students I have ever taught!
My Project
Second grade is such an important year for students to develop a strong love for independent reading! During this school year my goal is to pull students into the wonderful world that reading has to offer. For most of my students during their second grade year they will be reading longer chapter books for the first time. And that is why these chapter books are so important to my classroom. I have done a lot of research into what books to choose for my book clubs. I wanted books that will engage and keep my students turning the pages to find out what will happen next. And these are the books that I have picked!
Research have proven the need and importance for every child to read at home every night along with time in the classroom.
My project is going to combine all three factors that will ensure students gain a love for reading. I am offering a book club where students and an adult (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling, any adult important to them) can come and have a discussion about a book I have assigned. This book club will happen during the first thirty minutes of the school day once a month so that those adults attending will have a chance to come and enjoy the discussion of a book that they read with their child, or on their own before they need to head off to work! Each student will receive a copy of the book and will be given four weeks to complete the book before our Breakfast Book Club Meeting. Hopefully with these books students will be able to gain a love for reading in a fun and engaging way with their teacher and an adult too!
