My Students
As a teacher in a Title I school with students who come from low-income or high poverty homes, my students are faced with challenges in and outside of the classroom. All of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch at school, sometimes these meals are all that they may get for the day. Some of the students in my classroom live in shelters, motels or are living with family members or friends.
There are 9 students in my classroom with moderate to severe disabilities that come to school every day with the biggest and brightest smiles on their faces.
My classroom is specially structured to meet their needs. We strive to provide a full educational experience for all students, incorporating social skills, community skills, and functional skills into our daily routines.
My Project
Most students are excited when it is Friday afternoon and it's about to be the weekend, but then there are some students who are not. These students may worry that they may not be able to eat over the weekend or might not be able to eat enough. I want to make sure that all of my students are able to eat breakfast and are well nourished over the weekend and over long breaks.
My students need healthy snacks and breakfast foods to help them stay focused on learning.
These snacks will also help them learn to make good choices about what to eat for a snack, instead of grabbing candy or cookies when they are hungry. It's important that I am able to care for the whole child, not just teaching them to read, but making sure they have healthy food to give them fuel for their activities.
