Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are growing up in the city of Camden. Per capita, this city has been rated in the top five most dangerous cities in the past fifteen years. Drugs, poverty, and gun violence have wreaked havoc on this once thriving city and my students are living in the midst of this chaos. They are constantly given the message that they are not good enough for state-of-the-art technology, top line resources, and comfortable classrooms.
The lack of resources affects the students every day; my students need to believe that people are looking out for them and want them to succeed.
Every day they strive to broaden their horizons and reach for the stars. For many, school is the only safe haven they know. I work to instill in them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom.
My Project
Working in a low income district, I see hungry children everyday. As much as the teachers try, sometimes we fall short because of our own financial shortages. It is horrible to turn hungry students away because we have run out of snacks or food for them.
My students need quick breakfast items and snacks to help them concentrate and have a productive day of learning.
These items, such as oatmeal and cereal bars, will go along way in providing breakfast and healthy snacks for students who otherwise will go hungry. Potato chips and pretzels provide a good salty snack on those hot sweaty days. Living in a district with little or no resources, a quick breakfast or a quick snack go along way in helping our students. They are more attentive and feel that we really do care about them.
