Friedrich Nietzsche famously quoted, "Without music, life would be a mistake." Teaching discipline, creativity, self expression, and independent thinking, music education improves the lives of all children. I teach K-8 music and all grade levels have their own unique qualities.
My 2nd through 5th grade students are outgoing, love games, playing instruments, and singing in class.
In school, they strive to do their very best for performances and want to strongly impress their audiences.
Outside of school my students face many challenges. As an inner city school, most of our students are concerned with a lot of adversity. No matter what the situation, my students still come to school in hope of learning and love from their teachers. I teach my students that music can be an outlet for them to use as a method of understanding their emotions and how to deal with them.
In our school we have a low budget for instrumental funds. Currently we have access to recorders and bucket drums. The students love both of these activities but have expressed wanting to play instruments that are more applicable for use outside of school.
Adding Ukulele's to our current inventory will spark the love for music ten fold!
Students will be able to learn an instrument that is more practical in everyday use. String instruments allow for better transitions into music theory including the teaching of chord structures and their purpose in music, as well as other concepts.
In class, students will be able to have the opportunity to look at music they listen to outside of school and understand it from a theory perspective as well as performance! Playing as a class will help the development of group performance and the disciple necessary to succeed. Students will also develop the abilities to perform as an entire class, small groups of 5 or even 2, and even soloists! Ukulele's will boosts students' confidence in performance and music knowledge.
