Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Transitional Kindergarten is very special because it helps prepare students to be successful in Kindergarten. They arrive at school excited and ready to learn. However, many times they lack basic essentials. Many of my students and their families have fled their home countries in order to pursue a better life. Once they arrive, they live in high-poverty, violent neighborhoods with very few resources. Parents have had little to no education themselves. My school has a growing population that speaks a Mayan dialect. These students are working on mastering 3 languages. Due to parents speaking another language and social/cultural norms being different they experience the school setting at a higher rigor. Despite these challenges parents push their kids to succeed at school because they want a better life for them.
My students carry the great responsibility of being the hope for their families.
The hope that through their education they will be successful individuals that will give back to their community.
My Project
Some families at my school do not have the money to do the typical back to school shopping. These students often arrive without backpacks on the first day of school. I would like to change this.
Providing backpacks will allow these students to arrive prepared for the school day everyday.
The students will use them to carry home special projects that they have worked on in class to show their parents, bring books home to read with their family, and homework assignments. It will also help them bring things from home to class easily. Because my students are so young, it will also provide them the opportunity to learn responsibility in caring for something that is their own!
