Brainy Comics In High School Environmental Science!
My students need a classroom set of the amazing graphic novel--Climate Changed: A Personal Journey through the Science.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Cantor's classroom raised $911

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my high school science classes you'll see students working in groups on labs and activities, reading, writing and peer editing. There are times when reading about complex scientific concepts can be challenging, especially for those who struggle with reading or who are just learning English.
My school is an AWESOME CPS neighborhood high school in the West Humboldt Park area of Chicago.
We push our students to work hard and to think critically while we support their physical, social and emotional, and of course their academic needs.
Our student body is about 90% latino. Many families roots are from Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and South and Central America. Some families have been in Chicago for generations, and some just arrived. The official poverty rate of our students is above 90%.
While many of our students deal with many challenges outside of school including gang violence and economic difficulties, our school is a safe place for learning and building strong relationships with peers and adults.
My Project
The book "Climate Changed: A Personal Journey through the Science" is a fantastic introduction to critical thinking in science which uses mostly graphic novel style illustrations to show how the author came to an understanding about climate change.
Our textbook is so old that it makes no mention of climate change at all... it talks about the greenhouse effect, but not how scientists believe it is affecting our world. This scientific comic will be a very engaging way for our students to learn the science behind climate change as well as understand the how people struggle with scientific concepts to come to well-reasoned conclusions.
Climate change is one of the most pressing environmental, social and economic issues of our time.
Everyone in our society should have a deep understanding of the science behind it as well as an understanding of how scientific conclusions are developed. I hope that working with this engaging book will help my students be better informed critical thinkers as they mature into the adults who will be making decisions that affect our world for generations to come.
