Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you were 9 years old, would you have enjoyed reading books your parents read when they were your age? I would love nothing more than to enrich my students' learning with books that are of interest to the children!
The best way to describe all of my students is HARD WORKING & LOYAL.
Ninety-five percent of all the children that attend my school are low-socioeconomic. Their parents work 2-3 jobs to feed and shelter them. Although they go through many hardships that I cannot fathom, they always strive to reach their potential. They never cease to amaze me.
My Project
After settling into my classroom this year I have found that the guided reading books I have are not of high interest to the kids. I believe providing my students with new texts chosen by them will aide in their success in reading. Although they're grateful for what we do have at school, when they hear a citizen donated brand new books that they chose, the excitement generated will help reignite their passion for reading. This donation will encourage my current and future students that reading is not only a necessary skill, but fun also!
The chapter books I currently have are falling apart and are out-of-date.
There is no wonder why my students consistently ask when am I going to get a new set of books for them to read. This project is crucial because kids at this age tend to hate reading. Their independent books no longer have illustrations. Providing them with a new variety of up-to-date and culturally diverse texts will aide in their reading comprehension and in turn provide a "spark" back into their reading.
