This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 24 third graders live in a high-poverty area in Bell Gardens, California. They have very with limited opportunities to go outside and be active. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives, live with only one parent, or have a very unhealthy family environment. My class is a general education setting, including students with intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Despite all these challenges, they are loving eager learners who just want to go outside and play!

My Project

I took my third grade students outside for PE one day. I was SHOCKED that the majority of them had never used a basketball before. They loved it, and begged me every day to play basketball. One student, in particular, sparked my concern. He is a ten-year-old boy with special needs. He was beyond excited to bounce the ball, when minutes before in the classroom he was asking to go home. If this project is funded, my students can go outside, bounce their basketball, receive the wealth of fitness, and improve their lives. Every kid deserves to have a ball, right?
