My students need books on the brain including Thanks for the Feedback, I Think; Your Fantastic Elastic Brian; and The Human Brain Book as well as a few others.
My students can be very compassionate with each other but easily put themselves down internally. Learning how to be compassionate inside to themselves is important.
We are a small neighborhood school with over half our students receiving free or reduced price lunches.
My students are a great mix, ethnically and economically. They love discussing books. These books would allow us to do some great personal reflection. These books are highly recommended resources from the school counselor and they teach about the brain and what we think about matters. We have really struggled this year with how students internally feel about themselves. While some are very self positive, many more often say very negative self statements.
My Project
We will be reading these books as read-alouds. They are picture book formats, which will allow us to discuss them as we read. We will explore how self-talk can make a difference, both positive and negative. Each time we are more positive about ourselves, we can accomplish more. I am not talking about a false sense of self-worth but replying or silencing the little voices in all our heads that make us feel bad.
This will help counteract many of the negative voices we hear all day long.
We will all treat each other but also ourselves in a more positive matter. Learning positive self talk helps each student persevere when the going gets tough instead of giving up.
