We serve a high-poverty population of students who lack reliable transportation and sometimes even housing. For most of them, it is difficult to get the basic school supplies that are needed to learn. One hundred percent of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. My students come to school hungry and for a lot of them, school is the only way they can enjoy a nutritious meal.
At such a young age, my students already have faced and are facing many challenges.
I believe that although students develop at different rates, they are all capable of learning. Also, I believe that teaching lies not only in academics but in creating a safe and positive learning environment. In order for students to learn best, their basic needs need to be met first, otherwise little to no learning will take place. Please join me in supporting my students to reach their full potential.
My Project
My students come to school hungry and often leave hungry. This greatly affects them throughout their school day. Oftentimes, they walk to school or lack reliable transportation which causes them to miss the breakfast that is served at school.
I have spent hundreds of dollars feeding them or just sharing my own food with them.
I want to be able to provide my students with breakfast and snack items to help fuel their bodies and keep them energized throughout the school day. The belVita cookies/bars and KIND bars will serve as a quick and handy way of providing something for my students to eat in the morning if they were not able to have breakfast that day. Having extra snacks in the classroom such as the fruit snacks and veggie straws will help to ensure that everyone has a satisfied tummy, so they are focused and ready to learn. It is very difficult to concentrate when all you can think about is your empty stomach and food. This extra needed nourishment during the day will help to set a higher goal for all students in and out of the classroom!
