My Students
As a teacher, I am lucky to serve special needs to gifted fifth grade students in Arizona. We are a Title I community serving students who are financially struggling, but also students whose parents see our school as a real-world learning environment. The community is as diverse as the needs of our world today.
Our students engage in multidisciplinary projects in teams to collect data, synthesize, design, build and rebuild, all while learning the key learning standards for fifth grade.
If you visited my classroom, or toured our school, you would see all classrooms organized in cooperative learning groups. Students pair up with their face partners and should partners daily. Students engaged in explaining their thinking happens in every learning experience.
I work on a team of three to develop lessons and facilitate learning for students in our STEAM Design Academy. We are teaching our students to be college and career ready, starting at preschool. We're not training them for sixth grade. We're training them for life as scholars and future professionals.
My Project
Recently, my students asked if I had more games they could play. I have some items, but many of my games were disposed of after a fire hit our school early last year. I'm slowly building up the supply.
Math games are a great way of engaging students in exciting and challenging ways that also build their math and problem solving skills.
I am requesting a variety of math games that students have requested or that I have researched that would enhance the learning for our fifth grade students.
Games such as Tri-Ominos, Sequence, Kanoodle, Mobi, Proof, and Absolute Zero are among the games that I have requested to enhance the learning experience for my students. While they do have access to technology games, many still prefer the manipulation of pieces. In addition, these games build incredible vocabulary and reinforce accountable talk with others, as they play against opponents.
