Brain Focus Chairs; Seating to Help Students Succeed!
Help me give my students exercise balls for flexible seating that allows them to still focus while expending energy and improve focus with continual movement. Studies show that students have more focus and cognitive ability.
I work at a lower income school with a very diverse population. Everyone is welcome there, and no one is singled out for cultural or racial differences. Each student has talents and strengths that they contribute to the class, and the students have a team mentality that help them work together and accomplish goals as one. However, parents are not as involved in student learning as they need to be for the students to be completely successful. Cell phones are most students' and parents' only technology. Like most kids (and some adults!) sitting still in one place for most of the day is a hard thing! Studies show that flexible seating increases attention and engagement, two critical parts of learning. With these seating options, I hope to improve the engagement and learning for all the 5th (and some 6th) grade awesome kids!
My Project
These flexible seating options can be utilized in the classroom all day long! Studies show that students' engagement and cognitive function decrease rapidly when they are forced to sit in one place for long periods of time. However, with the use of flexible seating they can focus on learning while in continuous movement.
A variety of different seating objects helps students learn, whether the teacher is talking to the class, they are collaborating with other students, or they are working independently.
Balance balls, balance discs and inflatable stools will enhance the materials I have already collected to allow every student in the class to have a flexible seat. It will also help them practice taking turns and being responsible.
