Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Imagination is more important than knowledge," Albert Einstein, and this is our goal in an after school club called Einstein Eagles. We explore math, work in groups, and learn so we can go back and help others during the school day. We need activities to engage others for higher thinking skills.

We are Einstein Eagles and we love math.

We are great at what we do, and want to inspire others to look at math differently and have fun with it. We work together weekly, after school, to apply our math knowledge using higher order thinking skills. We attend a Title I school with an 87% free or reduced lunch program. We have a diverse population, strive to learn from each other, and wish to share our love of math with our peers and younger students. We build community in our classrooms and on our campus. We have approximately 650 students who work hard to improve their test scores, and teachers who take time to work with each and every one of us. We are in the 6th grade and want to return some of the assistance, we have received from others throughout the years, back to our siblings and friends that might struggle with what we love to do. The activities that we have selected involve multiple grade levels, and will help us reach engage the students we are trying to assist on campus.

My Project

I am requesting Math Activities CD-ROM Library - Complete Set and Mastering Math Games Library 4-6. These items will assist my students by helping to engage and create an atmosphere where students will see math as fun; and they will realize the necessity for it in real life applications. With an 87% free or reduced lunch population we have a lot of single parent families, ELL students, few families that are able to support or fund our after school programs, and students who work hard to help at home with siblings. Many students, who are great at math, will have an opportunity to help those who are not so fortunate for a variety of reasons. I am fully gifted endorsed, and I teach three general education math classes daily. I use gifted ideas for all my students because I have found when given the challenge and tools they are capable of reaching the higher expectations I require of them. We are looking for ways to have students buy in to math and once they are hooked we have them for life.

This project is important because it gives all of my students an opportunity to feel success in math, and also gives my accelerated students an opportunity to share their love of math with everyone on our school campus.

If I can give my students a reason to see the value of math then they will persevere on their own when given a more difficult challenge. The resources will also align with the Common Core Standards, our state will fully implement next year K-12, and can be used year after year.
