Brain Boosters

Help me give my students Legos, chess, and mancala, which will keep brains active and moods high on those rainy indoor recess days.

My Students

Here in third grade, we are explorers! Science? We explore the natural world, from Pangaea to climate, dinosaurs to dog breeds. Social studies? We explore our home city of Washington, DC, from the Mall to our local neighborhood. Math? We explore how to explain the world with measurements, fractions, and area. And ELA? We explore the world with rich vocabulary and figurative language.

Even on days when we don't leave the classroom, we're going around the world!

My students have a spirit of inquiry that makes them so special. My goal is not to give them answers, but to help them ask questions.

My Project

Picture the scene: The rain is coming down in droves. The students are excited because they've just learned all-day rain is the result of stratonimbus clouds overhead...until they realize that means we're stuck indoors for recess. Their scientific buzz fades to grumbling at the prospect of another recess in the auditorium watching a movie and sitting still, or coloring pictures in the classroom.

There's nothing wrong with movies and coloring, but they want their brains to feel challenged!

If we can't run outside, we can still flex our minds. With these Legos, chess set, and mancala board, indoor recess can be a time of growth and learning *and* excitement! (And the students who want to color? Still nothing wrong with that!)

These supplies will help my students grow in social-emotional areas too! There's turn-taking, sharing, rule-explaining, and losing and winning with grace. Plus, Legos are kind of the best. We all know it.
