Braille Readers Need Books, Too!

My students need braille books for pleasure reading and to increase literacy.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Zeligson's classroom raised $670

This project is fully funded

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching blind and visually impaired students of all ages in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Most of my students live in rural areas and are from low income families. Some of my students have other special needs, as well as a visual impairment.

Several of my younger students are learning to read braille.

It is exciting to watch them learn to read and "write" braille and develop independence and literacy and a love for reading. Unfortunately, we do not have an extensive collection of books for them and most of the students do not have braille books at home.

My Project

Imagine walking into a library and not being able to find one book that is in your language...or having someone read to you and you are not able to look at the pictures or read along with them. That is what it is like for my blind and visually impaired students that are learning braille. Print is available everywhere...on signs, cereal boxes, magazines, etc.

Braille is much more limited.

I am trying to put together a library of braille books for my students, so they will have books to enjoy and develop their literacy skills and a love for reading. We need a variety of books in Braille.
