Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My biology students are primarily ninth grade at our growing charter school! The strengths of our school include high levels of direct attention for each of our students, and we therefore have a very strong population of students with special needs.
We also offer online classes, and have a rich diversity of students for whom we meet their travel needs such as athletes, actors, dancers, and families with travel obligations.
We love our diverse population, and want all students to succeed on their unique academic path!
My Project
Due to the similarities between the sheep and human brain, a sheep brain dissection can be an extremely positive learning experience. These sheep brains have some important structures that are important for future biologists to see and dissect such as: pituitary and hypothalamus glands, protective dura mater tissue, distinct regions such as the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem.
The lessons that students get from this lesson include lab planning, recording results, identifying anatomical structures, and completing a lab report.
Additionally, many students feel a sense of personal growth in successfully completing an activity about which they may have felt some initial squeamish reservations!
