My Students

My class is all boys in grades K-2, composed of students with multi-cultural backgrounds and varying disabilities: emotional, development delayed, communication, intellectual, and other health impairments. Studies indicate that the learning gap between general education students and students with such disabilities in a self-contained room increases over the grade school years. My students have ENORMOUS POTENTIAL to learn and to catch-up! Differentiating instruction with implementation of 21st Century Classroom instruction, such as with technology, increases their ability to retain and implement core academic skills, which will increase their inclusive opportunities. The K-2 grade years are their academic foundation to successfully excel throughout their school years and beyond.

My Project

My students need five iPads with cases and 14 JVC headphones to engage in 21st Century instruction to support retention and application of core academic skills and knowledge. Students engage well with technology. For the students' best interest, technology will be primarily used as an alternative mode of instruction to support accessing background knowledge, retention and application of concepts, skills and knowledge. There are many applications that align with instructional objectives, such as decoding first letter sounds. Technology is a highly movitating instructional tool for the students that "supports instruction" for increased acquisition of content material.

Students will have a sense of ownership of their learning with minimal support to successfully access an application related to instruction.

This is a positive reinforcement of what they have learned since the students enjoy the use technology. As the Intensive Skills Class teacher, having learning centers that consist of two students at a time, I can work with one student one-on-one, while the other student is independently employing his knowledge of content with an application that is at his present level of performance. Independence with an application related to an instructional objective is ultimately SUCCESS!
