My school has a wonderful, but needy group of students.
We have a transient, high needs, high poverty population.
Over one third of our student population are English Language Learners (English is not their first language). We have students from 18 countries in our building. The primary languages spoken by our students are English, Spanish, French, and Kirundi.
Hygiene, unclean clothing, trauma, chaotic home life, and lack of food are common concerns among this population. Despite these concerns, parents are very supportive.
My Project
I work in a high poverty school where kiddos often come to school dirty and unkempt. With this project, I am specifically wanting to help upper elementary boys to build positive hygiene habits that will help them make friends and also be successful in life.
Boys who lack motivation to take showers can often be highly motivated when given products designed for men.
This project will supply many boys with high quality products to take regular baths/showers, wear deodorant, brush their teeth, and keep their skin clear.
I have found with my population, they often haven’t been taught about proper hygiene. For instance, they need to be explicitly shown how (and where) to put on deodorant or what steps to use when washing their hair.
With the proper products and instruction, these boys will be motivated and also smell better. Most of the time the students are kind to each other, however, sometimes a comment is made if someone is not bathing or brushing teeth regularly. Hence, your donation will help these kiddos not to have these experiences.
In addition to the hygiene products, I also found some fun bags to store the products in. This will also motivate the students and help them keep track of their new products.
