My Students

Some children are naturally drawn to books. For others, Xbox, Wii, TV, and sports seem much more appealing. When I encounter a reluctant reader I must find a kind of text that interests the student and can bring him or her into the world of reading. For many boys the answer is graphic novels.

I am fortunate to teach 25 fabulous second graders in a large suburban school.

Twelve of my students speak a language other than English at home. More than 25% of the class receives Free or Reduced Lunch. They are kind, enthusiastic and curious. This year, I have students ranging from very beginning readers to a student who is reading at a fifth grade level.

My Project

The 44 graphic novels that I have requested will provide high-interest free choice reading to all of my students -- the boys in particular. I deliberately chose quality titles that will still be exciting years from now. The titles include realistic fiction, fantasy, myths, and science fiction genres. Because my students are at different reading levels I selected a range of reading levels from 1st grade to 4th grade. The vivid illustrations help capture and hold the readers' attention. These graphic novels model plot and text features that we study in second grade. Students who are not drawn to more conventional books will be able to learn that reading is fun.

I can help my students gain the skills needed to become a successful reader.

However, it is much more difficult for me to help a student gain the DESIRE to read. When students enjoy reading they are much more likely to read for pleasure. Research indicates that the more a student voluntarily reads for pleasure the better he/she will likely perform on standardized tests. Graphic novels are an eye-catching and high-interest kind of book that can help reluctant readers learn the joy of reading.
