My Students

"The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can't." — Mark Twain

My classroom consists of twenty-nine unique students.

They all bring different stories, experiences and knowledge to our classroom. It is a wonderful environment to teach in and to be a part of. However, it is often difficult to keep students engaged in reading when the material is not up-to-date or appealing. My goal is to create a library of various series that will engage and relate to each of my students. I want them to want to read in school and on their own time. By the end of the school year, my expectations are that my students will leave wanting to continue reading throughout the summer. Reading is such a crucial aspect of a child's education. It can be a place for children to turn to when they need a retreat, when they need a friend, or just some peace and quiet. Reading cannot only help them as readers but also helps students write and speak as well.

My Project

Having already received two projects funded, I can’t believe the difference it has made in my classroom. However, I did not realize that most of the books I chose to purchase were geared towards girls. When I showed my class the new book order that was donated, all of the girls cheered. Sadly, the boys were not as happy. One boy raised his hand and said, "How come you always order girl books?" I was caught off guard and didn't have an immediate answer. Luckily, one male student stood up and said,” Just because it has a girl character doesn't mean boys can’t read it!” I agreed with this student. I assured the boys that I would fix this problem. After the students left for the day, I went through my classroom library and tried to find a basket of “Boy Books”. To my surprise there weren’t many in their reading levels. I felt horrible and decided to create this project.

Your donation will help my library to become balanced.

It will also show students that they have a voice as well. I feel that if I do not respond to their request then they will feel as if their ideas, feelings and opinions are not important.
