Boys and Their Toys

My Students

My students, especially the boys, love to build in the block center. Unfortunately, all we have are the large wooden blocks which are sometimes too heavy for them to pick up and pinch their fingers and smash their toes when they are accidentally dropped.

My students are 16 precious, preschool students who live in Washington, DC.

They are growing up in one of the toughest and most violent communities in our nation's capital. For most of them, our school is their neighborhood school and they walk to school. Most of them have experienced this violence first hand and bring their experiences into the classroom with them. Many of them come from single parent, multiple sibling homes.

My Project

I am requesting materials that will not only make the block center more engaging, but will also make it a safer center for them to play in. The foam blocks will be used to replace the heavy, large, wooden blocks that we currently have in our center. Daily, my students are getting their fingers pinched, toes smashed, and occasionally, hit in the head with the large wooden blocks. My students are only 3 and have not learned the art of being careful and aware of their surroundings yet, which causes these accidents. The foam blocks will not be as painful for students when these accidents happen. The other materials will be used to enhance the block center and provide for my developed play in the center.

With your help, we can save my students from pinched fingers, smashed toes, and lumps on the head.

Not only will these materials save the fingers, toes, and heads of my 16, beautiful students; they will also make the block center a more engaging and interactive center.
