Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a first year special education teacher, I know my students understand the will and strength necessary to graduate from middle school and smoothly transition to high school. It's an honor to help them take the proper measures to graduate as this is their final obstacle before entering high school!
My students are 7th and 8th graders with learning disabilities in special education.
Due to my background from a low income Latino family, my students easily connect with me because they too know what it's like to have the odds stacked against you when trying to obtain higher education. My school is located in a low income community of Boyle Heights; henceforth, why it's also a Title I school. Graduation rates are unfortunately low, but the students trust that teachers are on their side and will do what it takes to help them cross the stage.
My Project
Classroom materials and supplies have unfortunately been scarce since I officially began my first year of teaching 6 months ago because supplies are scarce, I have very limited quantities of books and technology including no printer and especially no speakers. When videos must be shown, we gather around in a circle around my laptop. When books are read, I must project my voice so that all my students, especially those with hearing disabilities, could hear me. This is especially difficult to do in a classroom full of students who have trouble hearing, and for the entire class when we decide to take our reading outside the classroom. As a class, we decided that our reading should not be confined to just the classroom. As a result, we not only read in the classroom, but outside in our garden as well. With quality speakers, not only will my students with hearing disabilities be able to enjoy literature through audiobooks, but also improve literacy outside the class.
As a special education teacher, it's my job and responsibility to make proper accommodations and modifications for each student and his or her disability.
This is especially true for those who have hearing disabilities. The speakers will allow for me to use audiobooks and show videos where every student in the class will be able to hear the necessary material, instead of continuing to rely on laptop speakers. The speakers will also allow students to have better access to literature.
