Mrs. L. from Duncan OK is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Boy Oh Boy, Let's Read!

My students need 18 high interest books that will grab the attention of the third, fourth and fifth grade boys to the point that they will not want to stop reading!

Everyday I have the opportunity to introduce over 400 elementary (K-5th) students to books that can change their lives. Our school is a "Title One" school serving students from homes with limited income. Many of our male students have not learned the value of reading for fun.

When boys come to the library they are looking for an exciting story. With limited attention spans they have trouble staying with a book to the exciting part. Books are needed that immediately grab their attention and don't look overwhelming to read.

Graphic novels with cartoon-like illustrations and dialog balloons combined with an easy-to-read text are the perfect books for boys who are not interested in traditional chapter books. The brightly colored, action packed illustrations and front covers quickly draw the boys into the story. Only two graphic novels are currently available in our library and there is a long list of boys waiting to read them. The number of requests for "more stories just like the one I finished" is growing everyday. Statistics show that although boys possess the same reading ability as girls: they choose not to read. Boys spend more time engaged in violent video games, watching violent television shows and movies and are more likely to commit a felony crime as an adult than their female counterparts. Providing boys books that they are interested in and continuing to make interesting books available to them as they progress through elementary school will help them develop the habit of reading for fun. I need more graphic novels of interest to boys to help start the boys at our school on the journey to becoming life long readers.

You can help our boys find the book that will give them the positive reading experience they need to start the life long reading journey. A love of books and reading can change lives. Please help our boys make that positive change.
