My students are hungry...hungry for high-interest, relevant, exciting books. My boys especially struggle to find books that are relevant to them, and they are often waiting for a copy to go from one student to another to get their hands on it. There are waiting lists for popular titles, they come to me after school for reading recommendations, and they eagerly await new books coming into the classroom.
Despite high school students resisting reading, in my classroom, we have created a culture of reading that students are proud to be a part of.
I want to give them more books to foster this love of reading. I want to make sure I have a book in my classroom library that will reach each and every student.
My Project
In my classroom, we are all readers. We read our choice books a minimum 3 times a week, in order to build our reading community and foster that love of reading in ALL students. Through the addition of more diverse books, specifically books that will better engage my male readers, it is my hope that my boys who struggle to find a book to read will no longer have that problem.
My students are in my classroom for a mere 12 weeks, but it is my hope that in those 12 weeks they'll have found at least one book that they can honestly say they loved.
Adding these books to our classroom library will allow so many more students to feel that way.
