My students need books that appeal to a variety of readers, especially books that hook struggling, young, male readers, I.e, Stink, Here's Henry, Andy Griffith, etc.
I teach in a Title I school in Colorado, where I have the amazing opportunity to teach students who just need a bit of a boost to solidify their reading skills.
Often, I look for avenues to teach my students aspects of reading that appeal to other interests, not only to motivate us all, but also to expose us to the fact that reading surrounds us for all of our lives!
My students end up finding their passions in reading, enhance strategies from the classroom, and bring skills from my groups back to their classrooms, as they truly enjoy becoming lifelong readers!
My Project
To motivate some of my struggling readers, I decided to try a flipped classroom approach. I have the groups choose the book they wanted to read at home to reflect their reading learning thus far this school year in a fun, creative, critical thinking activities at school in my intervention groups. We began with a field trip to the book room, where my student group, comprised of a majority of boys, began looking for a book for our group.
We could not find a fiction chapter book at the second grade reading level that had males as main characters, or even a set that was interesting to them, which had enough books (6)!
My foundational belief as a reading intervention teacher is to start with books that appeal to my students so that I can empower them to work harder than ever to grow multiple years in reading levels. You know what? This strategy always works for my students, though it must start with sufficient books they want to read. Please help us get there!
