"You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them." Boxing is a sport that requires one to focus on the task, to work with other, and to be humble. Boxing workouts pushes our bodies and minds to a limit and once one reaches that limit, we want to push ourselves more.
Students at Herbert Hoover Middle School are primarily students of color where 70% of them are qualified for free and reduced lunch.
45% of the learners at the school are English Language Learners and 90% of them are students of color. Students at Herbert Hoover are excited to learn and apply themselves when the challenge to do so comes.
My Project
I will be starting a lunchtime boxing workout program for our students. Lunchtime is a highly unstructured time and getting our under represented students into a structure setting will provide many of them an outlet to get a workout, have fun, learn some boxing moves, and work with others as they are learn the sport. Students will not be "fighting" each other but will be safely apply moves to their partner so that they are able to throw punches with control and defend against punches. Students will be throwing punches at mitt to practice their punching and defense techniques.
Many of our student are sedentary, agitated, not physically fit and many don't have an outlet.
Boxing allow students to get in their workout and it gives them a chance to learn how to work with others when a safe structure is applied. Eventually when students get confident in boxing, their character transforms because they feel good about themselves, they respect their bodies, they are more healthier, and they want to learn more. We are promoting healthy life long learners through boxing.
