Boxers, Saints and Angel Island

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature and art.

My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.

As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.

My Project

My students will read and compose wu-yan-li-shi poems in the style of Chinese immigrants delayed on Angel Island. These are powerful, and often sorrowful, poems of despair and hope. The first book in this project, is a reference guide containing stories and poetry from Angel Island. As an accompaniment, there is another reference book with several early photos of immigrants and their conditions on Angel Island.

After learning about Imperial China, my students will continue their study through the Boxer Rebellion and Revolution.

The book, Boxers & Saints, is extraordinarily well done historical fiction that takes place during the Boxer Rebellion. It tells parallel stories of a boy brought into the rebellion and a young girl resisting the uprising.
