This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a high poverty school, with many students coming from immigrant families trying hard to make a better life for their children. The kids are eager to learn, but most have not had access to experiences other than those found right in the neighborhood. None has been to see live theater, even though they live in NYC, only a few miles from Broadway. I believe every child dreams of being a star. I believe that every child has talent and the urge to show off. Although some might be shy, and others outgoing, everyone wants to shine. All love to be up on the stage, frightened and exhilarated and the center of everyone's attention.
My Project
My project is an odd one. Due to the generosity many years ago of donors here, and of the Capezio company, my students do not need many pairs of dance shoes. I have asked for just a few pairs to fill in the gaps in sizes that we are missing. However, as I stated, we had received these shoes many years ago. Over the years most of the shoes have basically survived, but the boxes definitely did not. My students borrow the shoes from my room for each class, and we are holding the boxes together with lots of tape and wishful thinking. I am therefore asking for shoe boxes to hold all the dance shoes. I have decided upon plastic boxes so, hopefully, we will not have this problem again. The boxes will be used to store both tap and ballet shoes.
