Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach approximately 120 orchestra students in grades 4-6. My students are creative, energetic, and inspiring. They are passionate about creating and performing music. Many of them share that orchestra is their favorite part of the school day. I often have to gently nudge them out the door when class is over, as they exclaim that they want to stay and have orchestra class all day!
For 30 minutes, my students experience the pure joy of holding an instrument in their hands, of creating music that tells their stories.
They thrive in becoming agents of their own learning, using music as a tool for self-expression and self-advocacy. Most of all, in the orchestra room my students find a place where they belong, a place where their voices are acknowledged and welcomed.
Much like cars and appliances, musical instruments require regular maintenance and replacement of parts to keep them in top condition. The items in this project will help us to maintain our inventory of school instruments. We need two violin bows to pair with two new violins we received earlier this year. It is helpful to have a few extra sets of strings on hand for replacing broken strings, especially as winter concert season approaches. Finally, the cello and bass endpin straps will help our low strings players to hold their instruments securely when they are on stage performing.
