This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 3 classes of diverse learners on many different reading levels. The students come from low-income homes. Unfortunately, within my school, and the area, the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students with these materials would be a small step but it would give my students one less obstacle to overcome on their own.
Luckily, our school has a large selection of books and novels to choose from but is lacking proper storage units. These students love to go through the classroom library when selecting independent reading books. Unfortunately it is so disorganized due to the fact we do not have bookcases. Currently we are storing our books in crates and boxes placed on the floor. I would love to have bookcases so our reading materials can be kept in good condition. The bookcase will ensure better organization and easier access for the children, helping to spark more interest.
Providing my students with these bookcases will allow me to sort the books properly by topic and reading level. I've noticed that although students in my classes are usually motivated to read, the process of searching through boxes of books has been discouraging task and thus, they lose motivation to read. My students wouldn't have to struggle finding books. Our current system of unorganized books takes a lot of time, energy, and causes lots of confusion. The bookcase would really help save space in the small, overcrowded classroom. This will make it much easier for the children to find books on their favorite topics and appropriate reading levels.
Please help me and our school empower our children to look for and be able to choose a good book easily!
