This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Walking into our school, you will find a diverse group of kids. Many of my students are English language learners, which means they are learning how to read, write, and speak English.
Our classroom is in an urban environment, filled with kids from all walks of life.
We are a Title I school, and our whole school gets free breakfast and lunch. I have a few students from troubled homes, which makes me work harder to create an environment where every child feels safe and able to learn the skills necessary to be ready for middle school and beyond.
My Project
The pandemic has created some very large learning gaps in my students this year. Three-quarters of my class are reading at a level below second grade. I need to catch them up and get them reading at a fourth-grade level by the end of the year. The way to do that is to provide a variety of reading material that is in their zone of proximal development reading level. In addition, I would like to provide them with headphones, so they have an opportunity to listen to fluent readers and improve their listening comprehension.
As a result of the pandemic, my students are in need of books at a lower reading level than I currently have in my classroom library.
Research shows that students are most successful and gain the most benefits from silent reading when they are selecting and reading books that are exactly at their reading level. Improving the quality of our classroom library with new books, organized by level, will allow my students to select books at their reading level that interest them. This will ensure they can successfully read independently.
Reading books at their reading level will support the Nevada Content Standards in reading because students will be building their vocabulary and reading comprehension. As students read and comprehend with success, they will foster a love for reading!
