My students are lacking in organizational skills and the ability to reflect on past assignments. Reflection is imperative in order for students to make changes and improve their work habits. Routine use of these portfolios will allow students to take pride in their work.
I teach eighth graders in a high need community.
They are often struggling with issues outside of school and many of them lack adequate resources. At this age, students are in the midst of transitioning between middle school and high school; they are still treated as young children, but they are entering adolescence. I am actively preparing my students with the skills they need for greater independence and success in high school and college, while also trying to increase the level of professionalism in the classroom.
These portfolios will be designed to mirror the school grading policy, sorting student work into categories on which they are graded. Allowing students to take ownership, organize and reflect upon their portfolios will foster a sense of independence and self direction. This portfolio will be designed to showcase the students' best works, allowing them to take pride in their accomplishments.
Self reflection is crucial at this age and point in the learning process.
Having portfolios like this forces self reflection, allowing students to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, which lays the foundation needed for academic growth and meaningful learning. Your help will ensure that my students are being supported in this transitional period of their lives, by assisting their development of basic life skills which will greatly impact their future educational experiences.
