Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I believe that all children deserve the opportunity to develop literacy skills. In order to develop these skills, students need exposure to books. My students range in age from preschool to high school and beyond. These students have Cortical Visual Impairment. CVI is a brain based visual impairment caused by damage to the parts of the brain that process vision. CVI is the leading cause of vision loss among children in the United States today. Special care needs to be implemented when creating literacy materials that encourage looking behaviors, interaction and interest for students with CVI.

All children can be readers and reading involves the understanding of symbols on a page.

For students with CVI these symbols can be photos, pictures, objects, tactile graphics, print or Braille. I create adapted books based on the student's looking behaviors, preferred colors/objects and interests. Students with CVI often have difficulty using their vision when an image/page is too complex. In that case I will isolate the image on the page and use a solid-colored, black background to create contrast and make that image stand out. I've been creating laminated, adapted books for years. I recently learned that there are laminators that create stiff board-like pages. Our customized CVI friendly books will be more durable and will last for years using this technology. I am requesting a10 ml laminator that will create stiff, board-like pages and a spiral binding machine with spines to bind the books and facilitate turning the pages with ease.

My hope is to instill a life-long love of learning for my students through adapted books that are accessible, relevant and meaningful. When my students are exposed to the world in ways that are accessible, they are provided an opportunity to develop their literacy skills while learning important concepts.
