This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being 5? It was so hard to sit still! Even now, as a "grown up" when we are asked to sit still, it is a huge task to be able to focus without thinking about something else! My kindergarten ears love to work and play, but they have such a hard time sitting still!

My students are a group of 22 of the most diverse, eager learners.

They attend a magnet school in Connecticut, and as a result of attending a magnet school, my students come from all areas of our city. They love to play and learn, and they especially love anything having to do with music and movement! Their love for "getting their wiggles out" has really been a deciding factor in choosing the materials for this project. Some of our students went to pre-k, while about half of our kids didn't. Some haven't had the experience or the socialization to be able to sit still for long enough to focus. I would love to give the kids who need the additional sensory input the ability to use these stability balls to provide balance and focus during their learning. Research shows that these stability balls can really improve focus, and I can't wait to be able to provide that opportunity for my students!

My Project

I am requesting 12 kid-sized stability balls and one teacher-sized stability ball (for modeling how to use them), so my students will be able to focus while learning and getting their wiggles out! My hope is that with these stability balls, the students will be able to focus on their work while still getting the sensory input that their little bodies so desperately need. I expect greater focus, more engagement, and an eagerness for working on grade even skills! I fully plan on using these balls for the entire class throughout the year. With your help, I plan on doing a study of how my student engagement changes and presenting stability ball chairs as an option to use throughout the district.

I really want my students to be successful - regardless of the challenges they face.

My students will be one step closer to meeting their goals with the help of overcoming this "wiggly" movement obstacle! By giving the kids this opportunity to move, giggle and bounce in an orderly way, my students will be able to focus on the classroom instruction with much better engagement.
